Inventions and Innovation in Indian Higher Education

Inventions and innovation lie at the heart of engineering. For an engineer, it is the love and passion for technology which motivates them to constantly innovate, or for that matter opting to be an engineer in the first place. Invention is transformation of beautiful thoughts into palpable ideas; innovation goes a step further – it is the preparedness to mix novel ideas with commercial world to create beautiful products designed to impact the lives of the needy.

IIM Bangalore
IIM Bangalore
A WHO report estimates that, globally, there are 40 to 45 million people who are totally blind; 135 million have low vision and 314 million have some kind of visual impairments. Some students at the IIM Bangalore were so moved by this hard-hitting reality reported by the WHO that they invented a new aid for the blind. The students used their knowledge and passion to help people by using a device consisting of two video cameras, a computer, and a scanning light source. The system, much like a human eye, scans surrounding objects from two points; enabling the blind to walk without using sensory canes.

This beautiful story emanating out of the Indian university is a perfect example where students utilized their proficiency, skill, and innovative skills to convert innovative ideas into reality for common use.

IIM Calcutta
IIM Calcutta
In the annals of human history, technology and innovation have become two inextricable words. The technology today, is driven by the engineers which has also led to a tremendous increase in innovation capabilities. Innovation includes an end-to-end process, such that it extracts value through application. From minor quality improvements to cutting edge products and services, innovation plays a substantial role in each one of them. For many, it is the innovation which drives them towards inventions, which ultimately impacts the lifestyle of many. Students at the IIM Calcutta used a smartphone and a chip to calculate the moisture of soil. Imagine how advantageous it could be for farmers to conserve water in developing countries like India, where there is scarcity of water throughout the year.

More than the skill and knowledge, it is the zeal to work for humanity and create a product by effective and efficient use of resources is what drives the students to invent products targeting the needy. The progress of a country, one as historic as India, depends on the “innovative young minds”. It will be fare to determine that a country’s growth is always directly proportional to the innovative skills of the engineers it produces.

For many years, women were considered only second fiddle in the innovations, industry, especially in case of a startup, however, the changing global scenario has motivated and encouraged female innovators to come ahead and pitch in their ideas. Vrushali Prasade is a perfect role model for women aiming to establish themselves amongst the men.
She, along with her batch mates Shubham Mishra, and Harikrishna Valiyath; third year students from her college have built a Virtual Reality Headset – Tesseract under the company name Absentia. The device uses a mapping, clustering and resizing algorithms to convert any content which one can run on a laptop to 3D, 360 vision.

Education in Private Schools in India

Education in our country is not only limited to the Government run schools. As the country is in its consistent pace of developments, the standard of education has also changed substantially. More parents are interested in getting their children enrolled in private schools.

American Montessori Public School
American Montessori Public School
In the list of private schools, these two schools have also made a significant place. Both the schools are affiliated to the CBSE and are ISO certified. From the two, the former school, i.e. the American Montessori Public School is a co-educational, English medium school and comprises of classes till senior secondary level. The school is situated in DLF City, Gurgaon, therefore, has the maximum crowd of students from south Delhi and Gurgaon. The educational philosophy of the school is to discover a child because of the uniqueness of each and every child. The school has a well designed curriculum for all the classes.

A.P.L Global School
A.P.L Global School
The school prepares the students for various examination checkpoints, primary progression tests, IGCSE, and A level examination. The A.P.L Global School was accredited from the Cambridge International Examination (CIE). The school has a target to bring out the best in every single student by making them realize their own potential. With a mission, the school is consistently working towards to provide learning and student friendly environment which is target oriented, to create personalized learner centric with an appropriate student teacher ratio.

The two schools believe in quality education and hence are busy in delivering the same. These schools are among the private schools of the city where again the main focus is given to the child emotional maturity, which decides the criteria for promotion to a senior class. With lots of efforts put on the all round personality development of each and every student in the school, this highlights the tremendous capacity of an individual to come as a mush bright future with variety of opportunities waiting for them in the world outside.

For this profile, you must hold a bachelor’s degree in any of the specializations. Further, it depends upon the school as to what minimum level of education they demand from you. Some schools prefer only postgraduates for the middle school level. Also, some others may demand teaching experience too. So, it majorly varies from school to school.

As this is the highest level of teaching, so the remunerations are quite high. Generally, a professor’s salary starts from 40,000 and further depends upon the experience and performance. The career of a professor provides the scope for research which subsequently can make you a full-fledged researcher. And we all know how research itself is a great career.

Although, the private schooling has increased with due course of time than the government schools in the cities but in the rural areas also the same has been observed with a steady pace. In the present scenario, the parents are aware about the increasing demand of the private schools for the quality education they provide. Therefore, they try to the best of their potentials to provide the best for their children.

Importance of being Self-Reliant

Education is itself a blossoming field and all of us were given the best education for the best of whatever our parents could afford, but have you wondered why even after holding so many degrees, many of us struggle in the real market? Does our school and higher education are seriously lacking something? In my view, they are.

I Play I Learn School
I Play I Learn School
Education is not what we read in books, but it is more of what teaches the ethics and lessons that can be used in the future at challenging times. For instance, at I Play I Learn School that is located in East Patel Nagar, it is not about grasping and mugging up the facts, rather about understanding the concepts to the level that one can successfully apply them in real life. Simply cramming the things does not make any sense in the long run, it may fetch you the highest marks, but it will surely not put you on a high pedestal in the real world unless you know how to use them for the best. That is exactly where our present education system lacks. The dimension of ‘practicality’ is not there, though the theoretical one is strong enough in its roots.

As a parent, it is your utmost priority that you decide and teach your child the way they should be educated to ensure that whatever struggles you faced in that one phase all at once, your child won’t. The obstacles will still come in the future, but then your child would be equipped to face and solve the issues independently without feeling helpless.

Icon International School
Icon International School
To make your child self-reliant, you must start early as it cannot happen overnight. At Icon International School, to begin with, you can start as early as your child reaches the age of 7 years, start teaching them to manage their study time on their own. And as a result, gradually he/she will learn it so well that you will not have to worry what and when to teach, instead they would remind you the things. Their self-reliance will increase while their dependence on you will lessen.

The next crucial step is needed to be taken when he is in the senior secondary level. Instead of relying completely on the school curriculum or cramming the things just the way the teacher has asked him to, tell him how important it is for him to understand the concepts on his own and then take the required help. He needs to do his bit and we will now discuss how this can be done.

All of us are well aware of the tech-savvy Gen X, in fact, they are so good at Internet surfing, then why not use it for the matter of education? For instance, your child is not so good at history, instead of simply cramming the dates and events, teach him first that history is not only about the events, but it is about the ‘change and continuity’. He will see it not as a story or a baggage of dates, but start conceptualizing as to why a certain event happened? What led to it? Further, it can be made more interesting by watching the videos of the historical events which are at times funny, rhyming but surely will help him in memorizing the sequence of events quite easily.
Our country has a developing economy and education has been always in the highest priority to introduce new institutions in the list of ‘institutions of national importance’. In this list, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is at the top most significant position. Engineering has always been the first course to be opted by maximum students of the Indian community after medical. This course has been always the professional course of first choice.

IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur
IIT opened its gates in 1950 at Kharagpur and first convocation was attended by Jawaharlal Nehru. IIT Kharagpur was the result of the recommendations of the Sarkar Committee given in 1950. IIT Mandi
IIT Mandi
In the list of the various branches of institute across the country, IITat Mandi, is the new one to be added in it. IITMandi was declared under the Parliamentary Act in 2008. After declaration, it was established in 2009. The main Campus is located in Kamand. A transit campus of IITMandi, called Mandi Campus, is also managed in the premises of the Vallabh Degree College in Mandi. Mandi is located at a distance of around 475 km from Delhi and around 200 km from Chandigarh on the Delhi-Manali route. The academic facilities include a library and well equipped laboratories of all the branches of engineering. There are many facilities presents within the campus, such as sports and medical. The campus has the hostel facilities within the campus. Like the rest of the other branches of IIT, this branch also has the state-of-art infrastructure and excellent quality of education is being delivered. As it’s been very few years since the institute was established, it has to go a long way to establish ad achieve heights.

From the task of producing high quality engineers, all the branches of this esteemed institution are busy in performing quality research too. Every single IIT in the country is unique in its own way working for single goals to produce graduates of engineering and to do enriched research work.

Innovations in Indian Schools

Truly, education is not a field where stagnation can work, as it is the mother field, giving birth to numerous other fields, which are created by the educated ones. Education is not written on a paper, but it is something that is part of a lifelong learning process, right from when the child is born till the last breath. All that we learn throughout life is a part of education. It should not stay only within the confines of classrooms, but should also move beyond it. But then, one cannot undermine whatever is being taught inside classrooms, after all a classroom is the first source of thought, a place which naturally is an environment for budding ideas.  So, the innovations in classrooms are of sheer importance. Over the years, a great change has come in the pedagogy followed in schools as well as colleges. In the classrooms itself, the pedagogy has evolved in a great manner. Today, we have entered a time, which has moved beyond the affairs of blackboard, chalk and duster. Things have changed in many ways and have changed for the better.

Amity International School
Amity International School
Firstly, the blackboards have now been replaced by the ‘Smart-boards’ or the projector screens. Power Point Presentations or PPTs and documentaries are the trending patterns now. For instance, Amity International School is one of the premier institutes in India to abolish this pattern of teaching. This not only enhances the quality of teaching, but also keeps children greatly involved. It is a scientifically proven fact that the visualized concepts are easier to remember and last in the memory far longer.

Ajmera Global School
Ajmera Global School
Secondly, the Internet has become a handy tool for both the teachers and students alike. It is a medium, which not only connects friends, helps search random topics, but is also the new platform for developing ideas. Ajmera Global School, for example, provides fast internet connectivity to the students. Doesn’t a class of Political Science become more interesting when the topics are discussed, debated and questioned online on posts, discussion forums, blogs, etc.?
Thirdly, imparting lessons through role-play and drama has become the new trend setter in the education sector. A history class can be made interesting if students are made to enact and learn. Through drama and role-play, it becomes easier for the students to remember the factual details as it increases their level of participation.

Also, education is not something that must be evaluated only on paper. It is something one can learn from anybody at any time. But, one must know how to apply that in life. In today’s action-oriented world, your actions speak far more than your academic numbers. Nothing encourages the child more than the fact he is being praised for his work. It goes the same for us too. So, whenever he corrects his mistake, uses a new word you taught him, does takes his responsibilities himself or even if he does something wrong in the process of any task, praise him so that next time he will not deter from taking up anything new.

Research and Innovation – Key Ingredients for Academic Success

A key part of an institute’s unique learning atmosphere is research and innovation. These days, institutes have to offer opportunities to the students to implement what they are learning within their degree in real-life organizations and environments. Thus, Indian Universities develop communication, leadership, professional, and interpersonal skills, which greatly enhances the career opportunities for the students. Students at Indian Universities not only acquire the skills to establish a successful career, but also develop a global outlook, self-confidence, and leadership skills that sets them up for the hardships and positives in their life.

IIM Indore
IIM Indore
Founded in the year 1996, IIM Indore,  is a public research university based and built in Indore. It is the third University established in the metropolitan area of Indore.  It is ranked in the top 40 universities in the Asia-Pacific region and within India's top nine universities according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the U.S. News & World Report Rankings, and the QS World University Rankings.  It is ranked first in environmental sciences and ecology research within the Asian subcontinent, and is ranked 14th in the world, according to Times Higher Education. The institute is famous for its interdisciplinary research, teaching, highly skilled graduates, and first-class facilities that are provided to the students studying in the university.

IIM Bangalore
IIM Bangalore
Another institute, IIM Bangalore, introduces students to traditional management programs, divided by incorporating in- depth research and present market volatility with a wide selection of science lessons, taught through majors and minors that include Economics, and entrepreneur ships. Also, the students are introduced to business administration subjects such as marketing, management, accounting, statistics, computing, human resource management, and finance. The subject contributes to the various units of an organization. It develops an extensive skill that is required for administrating national and international organizations. The degree also offers flexibility of lesson choices such as accounting, law, or organizational psychology.

In various Indian universities, the students learn about ways to manage, restore, and protect our environment. The course allows them to study both the social and scientific aspects of the environmental field. The students are introduced to environmental issues and also learn about the science and technology connected with environmental science. The degree ensures a solid grounding in one of the five science majors like Biology, Chemistry, Climate Science, Environmental Earth Science, and Spatial information. Also, the Students gain specialist knowledge and skills in environmental management.

Eventually, three fundamental values are inculcated in the students from the beginning. Scholarship:They believe that learning, queries, and inventions improve lives; Integrity: To conduct the students ethically and, equitably for mutual benefit; Empowerment: To make the society a source of strength and creativity.

To suffice, it can be conveniently interpreted that the Indian institutes can go a long way in shaping the future and the role of the foreign as well as hybrid institutes developed in the recent times. Such colleges, apart from offering state of the art facilities have also started offering exceptional and unique courses, which may help the student community  grow and become strong leaders of tomorrow. Such is the global reach and impact of the Indian universities.

Importance of Short term skills training in schools

Since childhood, vacation and education have had a love-hate sort of relationship. It will be fair to say that these two have always been on the opposite end of the continuum.Children use vacation as their means of getting away from education and the continuous hustle and bustle of school/college.

Abhinav Bharti High School
Abhinav Bharti High School
What if, I tell you that you could combine vacation with education by studying in a beautiful city swarming with cultural and visual delights? Fast forward to the Abhinav Bharti High School, a school located in Kolkata. Now you must be wondering why I equated the words education and vacation with this prestigious Institute. The reason lies in the fact that the school, a privately owned one, offers short time holiday courses in highly skilled areas of education. The main aim of such courses is to build the academic profile of the students.
Established in 1945, the institute was opened with an aim of offering advanced skills training that offers courses which are handpicked by its highly recognized faculties. The institute came into existence after a revolutionary pact was signed between the governments of India and state authorities. Its short term advanced courses in technical training are popular amongst students who are looking to study part-time courses. Also, in the recent years, a surge has been witnessed in the number of Indian students enrolling in the school. Moreover, as part of its commitment to the cause of “Education for all”, the institute offers multiple scholarship as well as full time fellowship programs to the needy.

Student life
The school through its “Students Affairs Section” offers a complete range of student development as well as career services. Also, its commitment towards providing a homely atmosphere for students is second to none. It offers a complete support to the student community and its services cover a wide domain. Through its student development cell the school manages activities catered around the student development, sports & recreation, career guidance, and an alumni cell.

Student Facilities

Delhi Public School Dwarka
Delhi Public School Dwarka
When it comes to the facilities offered, Delhi PublicSchool Dwarka offers a state of the art sports complex with latest sporting amenities and facilities for games like tennis, baseball, basketball, and many more. There is an old saying that all work and no play, will make Jack a dull boy. The school strictly adheres to this policy and has integrated sports as part of its curriculum. Furthermore, the school offers hostel facilities to all the students. Also, the campus includes an auditorium and two lecture halls.
These two institutes have been pioneers of the Indian education model and their success have ensured that the students go a long way towards achieving their dreams. Apart from these, other facilities offered by the school include a bunch of amenities. Eventually, the role of such facilities in the developing minds of the students is humungous. In a nutshell, the students learn from working in holistic environment and it can go a long way in helping the overall growth of the student community and improving their performance.

Highlights of the Preschools

With the beginning of the modern era, early education plays a very important role in a child’s life and this purpose is fulfilled by preschools. As the formative years of a child always act as a foundation for the rest of the life, therefore looking at the importance of these years, a child should be given early education appropriately with a deeper conscience.

Since the early education given in a preschool builds a base for further elementary education of a child, hence parents should be very cautious about their child’s education. Although, there are many preschools in and around the city, but the selection of the suitable preschool for a child can only be done by a parent, as they are aware and understand what is best for their child.

Happy Feet Play school
Happy Feet Play school
In the pursuit of delivering knowledge and developing a child completely and its learning procedure, the Happy Feet Play school was established in April 2007 and is located in the heart of the city, New Delhi. The infrastructure includes well-structured classrooms and outdoor spaces within the premises. The playground nurtures the development of the physical health of the students. The school has a well-designed research based curriculum, which includes excursions to places such as post office, railway, museums, parks, etc. to make them aware about the heritage of the city and to improve their general knowledge. The school comprises of a small art and craft room, a dining room, an activity room, a splash pool, among many other facilities. The school realizes the importance of the mental growth of a child, so many games is organized and students are exposed to solving puzzles, play and learn about the toys, sing and dance with friends, listen to stories. Also, the children are introduced to new colors and taught to identify them, taught to count numbers and letters, hold a crayon, paint, scribble, tear and paste. All these activities enrich their learning process and increase their inclination towards creativity, sports and academics.

Golden Bells Play School
Golden Bells Play School
Another preschool namely, Golden Bells Play School is an epitome of a preschool, where the complete focus on giving to the development of a child in all aspects. Recently the school has been established and is located at Ashok Vihar, North West Delhi. The school premise is sufficient to accommodate a good number of students along with the availability of some important facilities for them. The other facilities include a swimming pool, a creative art room, a skating ring, a library and storytelling room, music and dance room, auditorium, electric train, a mini zoo, RO filtered drinking water, uninterrupted power supply, smart card enabled security, e-interaction, GPS, and geo fence alarms. The classrooms are well designed in lively color combinations, theme based and unique, with computer and projector aided teaching. The school faculty members are busy in teaching the basic skills and etiquettes of life. The school also addresses the importance of the growth of parents in terms of understanding their child and their needs in a better manner, therefore with reference to this point, the school organizes seminars and activities for the parents, stressing the ways of valuable parenting and child upbringing.

Rankings of Higher education Institutes in India

In a recent survey by Times Higher Education Rankings, only a handful of Indian Institutes managed to perform in the overall rankings. For some, it may be the beginning of something very exciting, for others this may be a huge heartbreak. Each year, we hear a lot about the impact of the Indian institutes, and how the Indian education system is ready to compete with some of the more successful ones in the America and Europe. However, if we talk about the sheer performance in various rankings, it appears that we still have a lot to achieve. It’s not that everything is going down, when we talk about the higher education system in India. One can easily point out a lot of correct decisions and policy improvements, which have already reserved their place amongst the best institutes.

IMS Dhanbad
IMS Dhanbad
The Indian School of Mines Dhanbad has been one of the most prominent institutes both in terms of student satisfaction as well as the student placement. Although, it hasn’t yet been able to crack the top 100 list, however, the signs are very positive as well as promising. It will be fair to say that if the institute carries on the same path, then it will not be far from being successful. Other private as well as government institutes can take a clue form such institutes and perform to the maximum. Moreover, these institutes can act as model colleges for higher education institutes in other countries. Not just that, they can encourage and motivate others to perform to their maximum potential.

Top 10 IIT
Top 10 IIT

Some of the best institutes, for instance, top IIT in India, have also had a motivating growth story. Apart from the conventions of the modern world, these institutes have managed to perform and outscore the other institutes. Be it any factor, institute rankings, placements, student satisfaction, quality of student life, or quality of education, these IITs have managed to score exceptional points in each of them. Other developing economies, for instance, China has managed to outscore India, with more Chinese institutes are able to outscore the ones in India. Besides that, the budget allocation to the improvement of higher education in India is one the higher side, yet the results haven’t been below the expectations.

Furthermore, one thing is crystal clear. Indian institutes have shown a tremendous potential. Now, the focus should be more on skill development and implementing crucial policies, without any Huss and fuss. India boasts of a great intellectual history, therefore, every effort has to be made to justify that baggage. On top of that, Indian higher education centers should replicate the successful educational models of countries like Japan, the US, and the UK. For instance, Japan has been successfully able to implement its state of the art technology to improve the level of its public as well as private education centers. Japan’s holistic growth model can be a huge motivating factor for not just the Indian institutes, but also others belonging to the developing nation’s bracket. Thus, IITs can play a huge role by becoming the perfect role models for other smaller institutes. Eventually, the growth of our country is directly proportional to the state of education in India.
