Acing the Various MBA Exams

The MBA exam is one of the most coveted exams in India and abroad. This test is conducted for admission to various courses in the universities abroad, primarily in USA and Canada. The aim of this exam is to test the proficiency of English among the students from non- English speaking countries. Sometimes, the candidates from English speaking areas are also asked to give the exam, given the variations in American to Australian to British English.

The test is about four hours and is divided into four sections. The first section consists of the four Reading Comprehensions containing 50questions, which need to be solved within 100 minutes. The second section is named as ‘Listening Comprehension’, which has short as well as long conversations. It has more than 40 questions based on the conversations you hear, and the time allotted for the same is 90 minutes. The third section is ‘speaking’, wherein the test takers are looking forward to a highly intelligible and sustained conversation. This section consists of independent tasks and integrated tasks. Some of the top management colleges in India like IIM Indore offer excellent opportunities to its students. The total number of questions in this section is six, which the candidate has to solve within 20 minutes. Finally, the last section of the MBA is ‘writing’ which is a very crucial portion. It is precisely an essay writing, which analyses the candidate on unity, progression, and coherence of the essay. Therefore, the essay must be presentable one, which can express your flow of thoughts well. You can afford some minor grammatical mistakes, but the quality of content must be intact.

Following are some tips that will help you in a long way to crack this exam as well.

Know The Basics- As you head for your dream college admission and subsequently for this exam, you must also first inquire about the requirements of this exam. For instance, certain top management colleges in India prefer a higher score in writing skills, while others lookout for better speaking skills. So, know their preferences well and prepare accordingly.

Improve Your Typing Skills- As the entire exam is to be attempted by typing the answers; you must be very confident of your fingers. The typing speed needs to be good as you are supposed to write for a stretch of four hours. Even if you are good at typing, do practice typing on different computers because generally you get so used to your keypad and when given a new one, you are bound to get nervous, which will affect your typing speed.

Secrets for the Reading Section- Firstly, you must know that it is not necessary to know the meaning of every single word in the passage. Practice the reading comprehensions without the use of a dictionary. Later, of course you can know the meanings. You need to skim through the passage and focus only on the area that the question pertains. The fixed questions are about the main idea of the passage, vocabulary related, and few inference questions.


Secrets for the Speaking Section- In this section, it is okay to stop for a few seconds now of responding. However, try to be brief so that if time allows, you can also sum up your viewpoint with a conclusion. The candidate will surely loose marks on poor pronunciation, wrong idioms, and improper use of vocabulary.
